This series was my first Learning to See series. It is the first set of focused work I have done in my life. Looking back, there is something special about the freedom in these works – freedom from too much knowledge of technique, from caring about subject matter and from worrying about how others will receive it.
The idea for these paintings came from a passage on Aleksander Rodchenko by Kirk Varnedoe in the book ‘Pictures of Nothing’. Varnedoe also provided my first introduction to artist Cy Twombly (along with many others in his writing) who all still influence me to this day.
