I stumbled on this painting by Cezanne in a book I was given this summer. It is also known as ‘The Sorrow’. It stuck out because it is not the typical subject matter that I am used to seeing by the artist and I found this work to be really moving. I was reading poetry by Rilke when I first saw this work and something about the weight of the man’s face on his arm made me think of his poem, ‘Song of the Beggar’.
For me, there is so much emotion in this painting and I like to imagine how Cezanne felt when he painted it. I have never seen it in person, but would love to make a trip to the Musee d’Orsay to see it someday.
